The World Youth Day pilgrims of the city of Juneau would like to thank the Knights of Columbus for their magnificent and generous support of our World Youth Day fundraising. The youth of the Cathedral and St. Paul’s parishes were blessed with support from parishioners, family, and friends – but the Knights of Columbus in Juneau went above and beyond anyone’s expectations.

On Sunday, July 3rd, John Heinley who is also a member and the treasurer of council #1760 presented a check from council #1760 for $2,500 to meet the fundraising needs of the World Youth Day pilgrims. (In the picture, John Heinley is handing the check to John Amoratis.)  Mr. Heinley was joined by Jim Betts who is a member of council #1760 and State Treasurer of the Alaska Knights of Columbus. Knights Mike Monagle and Bill Benning also stood by while the substantial donation was presented at the end of Mass. The WYD youth, who have spent months washing cars, serving spaghetti, cleaning yards, selling raffle tickets, and operating garage sales were overjoyed to receive the generous donation. All Knights present at that Mass joined the World Youth Day youth, along with their parents, and Director of Youth and Young Adult Ministry, John Amoratis, at the front of St. Paul’s Church to recognize the acceptance of the donation. This was just one of several large donations made by the Knights throughout the past six months of World Youth Day fundraising. Everyone rose to the occasion and now in just a few weeks, the youth of our parish will indeed join the Holy Father at World Youth Day in Madrid at the culmination of a pilgrimage that will also take them through other sacred places including Lourdes in France and Avila in Spain.

Anyone who knows a Knight is encouraged to communicate appreciation for their amazing generosity and spirit of service to the youth of our parishes. Thanks to their tireless efforts, youth from the parishes of Juneau will be attending World Youth Day with the Holy Father.
