Fr. Fr. Weise (age 46) is the former pastor of the Cathedral of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary in downtown Juneau, and was ordained a priest for the Diocese of Juneau in 2002.

In a public update on social media on the evening of Dec. 2nd, the family of Fr. Thomas shared the details of his condition:

“To all those who have been following Fr. Thomas’s progress this past week, we thank you for your thoughts and prayers. At this point we thought it might help others to know a little more about the situation Fr. Thomas is in, as we recognize that he is part of your lives as well.”

On Wednesday night before Thanksgiving, Fr. Thomas went into cardiac arrest. The exact cause is still unknown. After CPR by family and the paramedics, his heart beat returned but not his breathing, and he did not wake up…

The following night … his heart stopped again. After approximately 45 minutes of CPR, and excellent work by the hospital team, his heart beat returned.

… Although we see progress that his body is healing, unfortunately these two cardiac events have been extremely tough to his brain and body, and he has not woken up yet. Tests show that he has a severe brain injury from a lack of oxygen during those incidents.

We all hope and pray that Fr. Thomas will recover so that he can continue to be part of our physical lives here…but if that is not God’s plan, then we know he will be closely looking over each one of us.

Please pray that over the next few days Fr. Thomas will continue to heal and fully recover, and that we may gain understanding of God’s grace in this very hard situation.”

As new information about Fr. Weise’s condition becomes available, it will be made public on the Diocese of Juneau website at www.dioceseofjuneau.org and other Diocesan social media sites.
